UnitedHealth Group Inc. is making several high-level moves to shore up its legal team as it continues to expand its fast-growing health services and insurance operations.
The Minnetonka-based company said Tuesday it has hired Rich Baer to be its top legal officer, reporting directly to UnitedHealth Group Stephen Hemsley. Baer has been general counsel and chief administrative officer for Denver-based Qwest Communications International Inc. for the past decade.
Two other executives currently working as top legal advisers for UnitedHealth were given expanded roles in newly created positions.
Mitchell Zamoff will take over as chief legal officer for UnitedHealthcare, the company's health insurance operations.
Christopher J. Walsh was named to the same position at Optum, the company's health information and wellness operations. In April, UnitedHealth Group decided to merge three business under the single Optum brand to better coordinate business operations and improve marketing.
Both Optum and UnitedHealth Group are Fortune 100-sized companies.
